While cleansing and conditioning might seem impossible to achieve with the same product, you can easily create shampoos that both clean your hair and improve its texture.

The protein in human hair is very similar to wool protein, and early research on wool contributed greatly to our knowledge of the structure and proper ties of human hair.

The protein keratin constitutes about 80 percent of human hair. Many shampoos and conditioners on the market contain keratin or other proteins, such as beer and egg; manufacturers claim that these additives replace the protein lost in dry or damaged hair. According to the American Medical Association, there is little evidence to substantiate this claim. If these proteins do have an effect, it is similar to the coating effect of other conditioners.
